My son, Sam, is on the Junior Varsity Lacrosse team at his high school. He never played lacrosse before this school year and he is really enjoying himself. He is a goalie. The goalie takes a lot of hits and collects many war wounds. Sam wears them proudly. It’s just part of the game.
He has practice every day after school. If practice gets rained out, Sam still stays after school and either throws on the wall alone or runs laps and stadiums. He does this because wants to succeed. He wants to be ready. He is doing what he can to be prepared for any opportunity that comes his way.
Today is a big day for him. Opportunity came knocking on his door, and because he has been putting forth the extra effort, he was ready. Sam was called up to dress out for the Varsity game today. He may only stand on the sidelines or he may get some game time. Either way, he will be there, because he has put forth the effort, he has prepared, so he was chosen.
What about you? Are you ready if the “Coach” calls you up? Have you done all you can do so you are ready for any opportunity that may come your way? Have you been studying the Word of God, committing Scripture to memory, and spending time in prayer?
1 Peter 3:15 says we must “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” Romans 10:14 says, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” My question to you is how can you share with others if you don’t know yourself?
Take time with the Father, learn His heart, learn His character, and learn what He has called you to do, so when He “calls you up” for the big game, you’re ready!
I am so trying to be ready when the “coach” calls me up. Some days it seems I take more steps backward than forward but I know He is working in me and working out His purpose for my life!!
