I had an interesting encounter with a penny yesterday. I first came across it in a parking lot. I looked down and it was on the ground face up. I picked it up and read the words across the top, “In God we trust.” I put it in my pocket and went on about my day. I had changed my clothes to work out with my trainer, so when I got home and grabbed my clothes to head inside, the penny fell out of the pocket of my jeans onto the garage floor. Again, it landed face up….in God we trust. I threw my clothes in the laundry and added more darks to the machine. When it was time to take them out and put them in the dryer, in the bottom of the machine, I found the penny…face up…in God we trust.
Do we? Do we truly trust God? Or do we say we trust Him and then worry about things? [Matthew 6:25-34]
Deuteronomy 7:9 tells us, “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.” Scripture commands us not to fear more than any other command in the Bible. We can trust our God.
It is easy to trust the Lord when there is no risk…when things are going our way. It is harder to trust in Him when He has to show up or we’re toast. Psalm 62:8 says, “Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”
Back to the penny…three different times I found that penny on the ground. Every time I found it, it was face up. I realized the Lord was trying to make a point with me. When the face is up the coin was pointed up, we could read “In God we trust.” When we keep our face up, our focus on Him instead of our circumstances, we trust in God. So, just like the penny, when our face is “heads up” we can boldly say, “In God We Trust.”
You know, I guess that this is one of my greatest fears. I fear that when trial or persecution comes, I will turn my back on Christ. It happened to those who knew Him best, so it could happen to me. I SO do not want to deny Him or desert Him. I want to be found faithful with my eyes focused intently on Him.
