This morning I woke up with the Casting Crowns’ song “Who Am I?” in my head. As I got ready for my day, I pondered the question “Who am I?” I think many of us go through life trying to find the answer to that question. However, if we have a relationship with Jesus Christ, our identity comes completely from Him. Therefore, the more important question we should be asking is “Who is He?”
In Mark 8:27-29, Jesus asked the disciples who people said He was. Once they answered that question, He went on to ask the more important question, “But who do you say I am?” We have to know. If we are committed to living our life for Jesus, yet only know who He is by what other people tell us, then we are as confused as those who don’t know Him at all. We must find out who Jesus is in order to know who we are in Christ Jesus. So, if we can’t rely on what others are telling us, where do we go, who do we turn to? Well, let me ask you this question and maybe it will help…if someone wanted to know who you were what would be the best way to find out? I am guessing your answer was either, “By spending time with me” or “By asking me.”
It is the same with Jesus. If we want to know who He is, the best way to find out is to ask Him and spend time with Him on a regular basis. Jesus identifies Himself to us over and over throughout scripture. John 14:6 says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 15:5 says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” And Isaiah 64:8 says, “O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” Probably the most famous statement God ever made in telling us who He is comes from Exodus 3:14 where God told Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.”
The above verses are just a taste of all God teaches us about who He is. Dive in and you will learn so much about who God is and that will lead you to know who you are in Him. Be blessed!
I don’t ever want to go back to that place where I do not have a daily, intimate relationship with Him. He is such a blast and I love Him with all my heart!!
