I was walking on the beach spending some time with the Lord and I came across a seashell. I had been walking a while and it was the only shell I saw, so I picked it up. It was gray in color and very ordinary in appearance. Nothing about it stood out as striking, but I carried it with me as I continued to walk and pray.
The Lord told me I while the shell looked plain and ordinary and wouldn’t really stand out among other shells, it had purpose. He told me it had served as a home for a sea creature at one time and it wasn’t ordinary to that creature. It was home. It was safety. It was security. It was comfort.
So many times, we do things for others that may seem simple or ordinary. It may be something as simple as offering a smile to a stranger or taking time to open a door for someone who is carrying a heavy load. We may not think twice about it. It may seem like nothing to us. But to the person who you offer these simple acts of kindness to, it may mean the world. The smile may be the only encouragement another receives in a day. Opening a door for another or allowing them to go first in a line at the grocery store or Starbucks may be the only time they get the honor of going first. Look for simple, ordinary opportunities and do them in obedience to the Lord and He will take your ordinary and turn it into extraordinary.
