Does God ever speak to you through music? Music is certainly a way the Lord speaks to me. I find when I come across a new worship song, I play it over and over until I know it so well, I can get lost in it singing it to the Lord from my heart instead of from a PowerPoint screen.
I’ve recently been hooked on the song “The Anthem” by Jake Hamilton. The chant in the end of the song is “I am royalty, I have destiny, I have been set free, I’m gonna change the world!” It is a powerful declaration to sing over and over. So many times, we sing songs and don’t even slow down long enough to read the words and truly think about them and what they mean to us.
There is power in the spoken word. It is through the spoken word the Lord created the earth we live on and everything in it, including us [Genesis 1:3-2:3]. It is through the spoken word of the prophets God communicated with the people of Israel [The Book of Isaiah for example]. It is through the spoken word that Jesus cast out demons [Mark 5:8-13], healed the sick [Matthew 8:8-13] and raised the dead [John 11:43-35].
Proverbs 10:20 says “The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value.” As followers of Christ, we are to be people of blessings not curses [Psalm 109: 28]. We are told to bless those who curse us and pray for those who mistreat us [Luke 6:28, Romans 12:14].
When we walk in the way of the Lord, we will be filled with the His Spirit and many will be drawn to Jesus because of our obedience to Him [Acts 18:25-28]. We will walk in the presence of the Lord and be carriers of His love and His life to all we encounter. We will be able to sing the first line of the song “The Anthem” honestly. It begins…”I can hear the footsteps of my King, I can hear His heartbeat beckoning, in my darkness He has set me free, now I hear the Spirit calling me…He’s calling wake up child, it’s your time to shine, you were born for such a time as this.” Oh, in my life, let it be so!
