Have you ever noticed how one word can change things? The Lord keeps bringing me to the 23rd Psalm in my quiet time, so I’ve been able to really look at it verse by verse and in some cases word by word. After reading verse 4 about 20 times one word really jumped out at me.
Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Can you guess which word hit me? “Through.” I’ve never thought much of the preposition before, but reading it in this context makes it a powerful word for us as believers. The word through means “in at one end and out at the other.” It also means “past or beyond.”
Now look at the verse again. We never camp out or take up residence in the valley of the shadow of death. We pass through it. If you are in a difficult place right now full of hurt or confusion, hold on, because you will pass through it. Your circumstances may make you feel like you’ve been there forever or like there is no end in sight, but the Word of God is true and it promises you will come out the other side. I don’t know about you, but I just have to say “Praise God!”
I’ve been in those tough spots financially. I’ve waited on my biopsy report. I’ve buried someone close to me and I am here to tell you God’s Word can be trusted. No matter how frightening the spot is you’re in, you will come out of it in God’s perfect timing.
Look at verse 4 again. Not only does God promise us we will have a “through” in our situation, He promises us He is with us. He will protect us and comfort us as we are going through our difficulties.
Dear one, forget how things may appear right now and cling to the truth. God’s Word is your reality. You can stand on it and it will hold you up in difficult times. What will you believe today…your circumstances or the Word of God?
