Did you own a Barbie doll when you were little? Do you know a little girl who has one now? While it may seem like a simple toy for children to play with, many young girls grow up wanting to be like Barbie. The advertising industry spends on average 100 billion dollars a year to ensure we all strive to have the Barbie-like figure, makeup and wardrobe.
Satan, created as the most beautiful angel of all [Ezekiel 28:12], was thrown out of heaven because of his pride and desire to become greater than God [Ezekiel 28:17]. Through advertising campaigns he pushes women to strive to achieve for something that is impossible and in the process he becomes successful at his goal to destroy us [John 10:10].
There was a study done on Barbie and it was determined if she was a real person her back would be too weak to support the weight of her upper body; her body would be too narrow to contain more than half a liver and a few centimeters of bowel; and she would suffer from chronic diarrhea and eventually die from malnutrition.
God did not intend for us to be like a rat in a wheel pursuing something that will destroy us. We serve a good God and He desires abundant life for His children [John 10:10].
There is nothing wrong with trying to look nice. After all, your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit [1 Corinthians 6:19] and we don’t want Him living in a cardboard box. But what is your motivation? Who are you trying to gain glory for…yourself or the Lord?
1 Peter 3:3-4 says “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” If it is God you are trying to please, He tells you the way to do it. Beauty comes from within. By spending time with Him each day, He begins to transform us in to the likeness of Christ and we reflect His glory as Moses did [Exodus 34:35].
You want the greatest beauty treatment in the world…one that cost no money, but requires your time? Get before the Lord each day, surrender yourself to Him, and He will make you beautiful.

Amen, sister!! I spent too many years trying to pursue being thin…until I ended up with anorexia. I almost killed myself trying to measure up to the world’s ideal woman. Thankfully the Lord sent a wise counselor into my life and I began my road back to wholeness and wellness in my twenties.
Do I still struggle? Yes, at times, but now I have the wisdom to know when I am going in the wrong direction and turn around.
Great post, Susan.
