In 1986 Janet Jackson had a song out titled “What Have You Done for Me Lately?” The song is about a guy who used to do a lot for her to express his love and affections for her; however, he hasn’t done anything lately to demonstrate his feelings for her so she finds herself asking him “What have you done for me lately?”
I can’t help but wonder if the Lord sits on His throne from time to time looking at us humming that tune. Have you done anything for Him lately to express your love and affection for Him? Have you asked Him what He’d like to have you do today?
Love is probably the most misused word in the English language. We stand in church and say we love God but we also stand in our high school football stadiums saying we “love” football or “love” the song on the radio. We “love” chocolate, homemade apple pie, and family dinners. We “love” our dog and our spouse and our children. Are they all equal? Do you see God and your dog as equal? No, not at all; however, we use the same word to describe our affections for them both.
Love is just a word until you put action behind it. Jesus demonstrated His love for us by setting His crown aside in heaven and coming to earth to die for our sins [Romans 5:8]. He didn’t wait for us to get our act together to demonstrate His love for us. He loved us warts and all.
What are you doing for the Lord to demonstrate your love for Him? Are you setting aside time daily to spend with Him to see what is on His mind, what is important to Him? Are you spending time getting to know Him and sharing your heart with Him?
More than anything, our God desires a relationship with you. He went to great lengths to make it possible for you to have a relationship with Him [John 3:16]. What will you do in return?
