Have you ever watched a track meet and witnessed runners going over hurdles? Hurdling is sprinting while clearing obstacles. Hurdlers spend hours and hours on the track as they train for race day so when it arrives they are prepared. They cannot run around the hurdles or they will be disqualified. Hurdles come in various heights. Hurdlers must learn the secret technique of hurdling and apply it to whatever hurdle is in their path. They learn what it takes to overcome the hurdles in their way and they face them head on with victory.
We all have hurdles we face in life. Sometimes the problems we encounter are small and we can deal with them without much effort or thought. Sometimes they are gigantic and we cannot imagine ever overcoming them. The secret to overcoming our hurdles is to realize we cannot do it. We need someone to do it for us.
David had conquered many wild animals as he tended his sheep, but none was as difficult as the giant, Goliath, who stood before him [1 Samuel 17]. However, David understood if he would surrender himself into the hands of the Lord, the Lord would do mighty things through him [1 Samuel 17:45-47]. David recognized the battle was the Lord’s and He would take care of it.
When we face hurdles in our life, we need to remember we belong to the Lord and He is faithful to be with us always. He promises over and over in scripture He will not leave us nor forsake us [Deuteronomy 31:6,8, Joshua 1:5, 1 Kings 8:57, and Hebrews 13:5]. The battle is His. 1 Thessalonians 5:24 says “The One who calls you is faithful and He will do it.”
We need to trust in Him and believe in His promises. He has said He will go before you [Isaiah 45:2]. He prepares the way. We are not alone. Hebrews 12:1 says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”
What hurdles are you facing today? Are they small ones that hardly get your attention or are they the size of a giant? Either way, you will be victorious because the battle isn’t yours- it’s the Lord’s- and He never fails. Remember your secret technique is to reach up to Him and trust He will carry you over that which stands before you.
