How big is your God when life seems to be spinning out of control? Do you immediately assume He has fallen asleep or checked out on you? I’ve received some heart breaking news about a friend and I found I had to run to Psalm 121:
A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the hills– where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip– He who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD watches over you– the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm– He will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
There are so many promises for us in those eight verses. I think the one that really gives me the greatest strength in times of difficulty is verse four that says He never slumbers nor sleeps. Our God is always awake and watching over us. When things get difficult, He is there. The psalm goes on to say He will keep us from harm. He doesn’t just stand awake and watch what is happening in a helpless manner.
The Lord loves His children [John 3:16]. He doesn’t send evil our way. It is the enemy who is trying to kill, steal and destroy us [John 10:10]. We can choose to be angry with the Lord when things don’t go our way or we can choose to battle the enemy through prayer [Ephesians 6:10-18] and praise the Lord through our circumstances [Habakkuk 3:17-19]. The choice is ours.
Who will you choose this day [Joshua 24:15]? In John 14:6a, Jesus says “”I am the way and the truth and the life.” Today, I choose life. What will you choose today?
