What does your diet consist of right now? Are you a healthy eater or a junk food junkie? I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “You are what you eat”. There is a lot of truth to it. When you put healthy, whole foods in your body, you get a body that is healthy and strong. When you feed on processed foods filled with chemicals your body is filled with chemicals and toxins.
When I was diagnosed with skin cancer, I read all I could about my diet and how it impacted my body. I wanted to have a body with as few toxins as possible because research proves toxins are a breeding ground for cancer. I knew my diet wasn’t the only contributing factor to cancer, but it was the one I could control. I made a decision to change my diet and eat as clean and healthy as possible whenever I could so I could decrease the toxins in my body. It took time and effort on my part, but it has been worth the investment. Not only has my body been cleaner, but I have felt better, slept better and have had an increase in my energy levels the past four years.
The same is true with us spiritually. Whatever we feed our mind, soul and spirit is what we will become. Proverbs 4:23 says “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” The overflow of our hearts will spill into our words and actions and influence our impact in the world. What do you spend your time doing? What do you read? What do you watch? What kind of music do you listen to?
If we feast on negative or on self serving things, then negative and selfish words and deeds will flow from us. We will tear down instead of build up. If we feast on the Word of God, then we will be one who blesses others with our words and our deeds.
What are you feasting on today? Is it time for a new spiritual diet? Your spiritual health and witness may depend on it. A change will take time, effort, and real dedication on your part, but your spiritual health may depend on it. You were called to be a witness for Christ to the world [Acts 1:8]. Changes in your spiritual diet may be necessary to be the type of witness you want to be. Are you willing to take the plunge?
