Nineteen years ago today I married my best friend. In many ways it seems like it was just yesterday and in other ways it seems like a lifetime ago. Throughout the nineteen years we’ve been married, we’ve been asked the same question: “What is the secret to a long, happy marriage?”
Our response has been the same for over nineteen years and we’ve both tried to practice it daily. It can be summed up in two simple sentences. Christ must be the foundation of the relationship [Deuteronomy 6:5; Matthew 22:37]. Secondly, live lifetime trying to out serve one another [Matthew 22:39].
Our marriage is based on the cross for more than one reason. The cross is not only a reminder of what Christ did for us, but it is also a constant reminder of how we are to live. The foundational beam is vertical. It is secured and the basis for the other beam’s security. It represents our relationship with Jesus Christ. The cross tie is horizontal. It is mounted on the foundational beam and it is only as secure as the foundational beam. The horizontal beam is representative of our relationship with others.
I pray you have a blessed day today. I’m off to celebrate!
