When was the last time you had a physical? I had one yesterday and was thrilled to hear I am in great health. I guess all of the early morning workouts and watching what I eat is paying off. Good health doesn’t come without effort or even sacrifice. I have to sacrifice sleep to get up each day to work out and I also have to sacrifice some of the sweets I tend to crave in order to keep my body healthy and in shape. I don’t work out every day of my life, nor do I always pass on dessert, but I do try and have discipline in my life so I will be healthy.
The same is required of us to have spiritual health. We need to make certain we are feeding ourselves a healthy diet of the Word and positive messages as regularly as possible [2 Timothy 3:16 and Philippians 4:8]. We also need to avoid things that we know aren’t good for us [2 Timothy 2:22]. And just like we have to work out our bodies physically to be in good shape, we need to have discipline when it comes to spiritual practices as well, such as prayer, fasting, worship and surrounding ourselves with good Christian influences [Mark 1:35, Psalm 100:2, Matthew 6:16, and Proverbs 27:17].
Is it time to make an appointment with the Great Physician? Take a moment today for a spiritual physical. You may find there are areas in your life where you need to make some adjustments. Just like with physical health, any step in the right direction is a good step. Take it one step at a time and before you know it, you’ll be in excellent spiritual health. There will be sacrifices necessary to achieve the results you want, but it will be worth it.
