Do you have a garage? We do and I park my van in it. It’s great, especially when there is bad weather; however, lately, the light attached to the garage door opener doesn’t work. When I drive into the garage at night and turn the car off, the garage is instantly dark. It is very frustrating, because I am trying to find my house key and unlock the door to the house without any light. I got really excited when I learned my new cellphone has a flashlight app, so I can turn it on before getting out of the car and that small amount of light seems to be enough to see where I’m walking and allow me to unlock the door without a problem.
It is amazing how a small amount of light can still light a room. Have you ever experienced it with candlelight? Even one candle will cast enough light in a room for you to maneuver your way around.
In Matthew 5:14-16 Jesus said “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
It is easy to let your light shine before men when you’re at church or among a group of believers. It is harder to shine your light before men when your light is the only light in a room full of darkness, yet your small amount of light is all it takes to dispel the darkness and reveal all that is around. As you shine your light before men, then others may join you, but you’ll never know until you take the first step.
What part of your day causes you to walk into dark places? Is it the work day? When you step into commerce? For some people, it is their home. When you are called to go into a dark environment, it doesn’t have to remain dark if you are there. You have an opportunity to change the atmosphere. Will you? Will you follow the command of Christ and let your light shine before men? As the old camp song goes “It only takes a spark to get a fire going.” Will you be the spark?
