Will you be spending Father’s Day with your father this weekend? I will not be able to spend the day with my Daddy, although he will be in my thoughts and prayers and you can be certain I’ll be talking with him. I grew up the middle child, sandwiched between two boys, and yes, I’m a Daddy’s girl. I make no apologies for it. I am a blessed woman to have had such an amazing man raise me, love me, spoil me and become my friend.
Daddy is a big man at 6’3”. He was a giant in my eyes when I was growing up. I thought he could take on anyone or any situation that threatened me. He embodied the playground chant “My daddy’s bigger than your daddy.” I always felt safe, secure, loved, treasured, edified, and cherished by him. At the same time, he pushed me to do my very best, to always be honest, and to look for the best in others.
I would have to say without question my earthly father made it easy for me feel secure in my Heavenly Father’s love. When I read through the Word of God and come across verses that speaks of my Father’s love, I thank God for giving me a living, breathing example in my home growing up.
I recognize everyone is not as blessed as I have been, but no matter what type of earthly father you were given, your Heavenly Father says He loves you [John 3:16, Romans 5:8]. He tells you in John 17:9 you belong to Him. In Ephesians 1:5 He says you are adopted. Those who are adopted are chosen by their parents to be brought into the family. He chose to adopt you into the family of God. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 He says you are valuable. And what little girl (or boy) wouldn’t like to know they are the apple of their Father’s eye [Zechariah 2:8].
This Sunday is Father’s Day. I pray you each have the opportunity to speak with your father, if not spend time with him. If you’ve lost your father or have an estranged relationship with him, I pray the peace and love of your Heavenly Father will comfort you. No matter what, take time this Sunday to praise your Heavenly Father for all He has done for you and for all He has yet to do. He’s a good Father and He loves His children.
And to my earthly father, John Coggins, Happy Father’s Day! I cannot thank you enough for the amazing father you’ve always been to me and for the incredible spiritual heritage you’ve passed on to me. I love you and thank God for you! I am the woman I am today because of you and Mom.
