Do you ever get frustrated with our American culture? As a nation we are wrapped up in an entitlement attitude. We seek to serve self ahead of anyone else. We are have more heart disease, cancer, obesity, divorce, financial messes, wayward children, and depressed people than any other nation in the world. We pull God into a situation when it suits us and forget about Him otherwise. Is it any wonder our nation is so messed up?
God has the solution for all that is wrong with our nation. Romans 12:2 states “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is- His good, pleasing and perfect will.” The way to deal with any and all of the problems we face in this country is to first and foremost get our thinking straightened out.
Deuteronomy 10:14 reminds us “To the LORD your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it.” Everything we think is ours is really His. Instead of trying to determine how much of our money, time and stuff we’re going to give to God, we need to start asking Him how much of His money, time, and stuff we are allowed to keep for ourselves and what we’re supposed to do with the rest.
Romans 12:10 says “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.” Instead of putting ourselves first, we need to honor others. Being devoted to someone means “faithful, constant, loyal, devout.” There are plenty of marriages, work relationships and friendships that would be in a better place if we were truly devoted to one another. The road rage at rush hour would disappear, which would decrease the stress level of many Americans making us much healthier.
1 Corinthians 6:19 says “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.” If we truly applied this mindset to our lives, we would dress in a way that always honored God, we would take great care in what we put in our bodies and we would take great care of our bodies so they would work efficiently.
We cannot sit back and watch our country continue to slide down the slippery slope into destruction and do nothing about it. While we may not have the power to set national policy, we can impact the sphere of influence we’re given, starting with ourselves. It’s time we stop looking so much like the world. We were called to be the light of the world [Matthew 5:14]. Begin renewing your mind today, by saturating it with the Word of God. Learn what He has to say on any issue you face and let it impact you and transform the way you live. It’s time for a change!
