Have you ever been in a place that was so dark you couldn’t see the hand in front of your face? I thought I had experienced darkness before I went to Ghana, but realized there had always been some level of light present: a street light, a light from an alarm clock or something. One night in Ghana we were having dinner with my friend, Peter. Several of us stood to take our dishes to the kitchen when the power went off rendering total darkness throughout the house. I was directly behind another person, but didn’t take a step because I couldn’t see a thing and I was afraid I would trample her. Peter immediately turned on a torch, as he called it (flashlight), and he led us to our rooms so we could grab our own flashlights.
My flashlight kept getting dimmer and dimmer, which was surprising because I just put new batteries in it the day before. I learned the pull of the equator was so strong where we were it caused the batteries to lose their power quickly. It was important to refill my flashlight with new batteries daily in order for it to have the strength to make an impact in the darkness.
As believers, the Holy Spirit dwells within us[1 Corinthians 6:19]. He is our power source for all we face in this world [2 Timothy 1:7]. We need power to continually flow through us to do the work Christ has called us to do. In order for that to happen, we must stay plugged in to our power source. Even Jesus had to do this when He took on flesh [Mark 1:35.] We plug in by surrendering our weak power for His strong power.
My flashlight required new batteries each day to be a strong light in the darkness. We require time in the presence of the Lord- our power source- daily to be a strong light in the darkness. In Matthew 5:14 Jesus said “You are the light of the world.” We don’t want to be a weak light. We want to be strong, full of power.
The Lord has all you need to face this day. He’s waiting for you to come to Him so He can recharge your batteries.
