Do you like it when someone keeps a promise to you? Of course you do; who doesn’t. We all like to be able to take people at their word, when we can trust what they say and pledge to us.
Scripture holds countless promises from God. In order to know what those promises are, we need to spend time in the Word studying scripture. God is always true to His word. If He promises you something, you can take it to the bank. He will follow through; however, sometime He places conditions on His promises. There is something required of us in order to gain the promise. If you do this, then I’ll do that.
Jeremiah 11:4-5 is an example of an if/then promise. “Obey me and do everything I command you, and you will be my people, and I will be your God. Then I will fulfill the oath I wore to your ancestors, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey- the land you possess today.” If the Israelites obeyed God, He would give them the land He promised and be their God. So, why didn’t the ancestors already have the land? They failed to possess the land because they failed to keep up their part of the promise [Number 13:26-14:30].
Are there promises of God you want to see come to pass? Have you done your part? Have you done all God asked you to do in order for the promise to be fulfilled? If you’re not sure, ask Him. One thing is certain… He’s honest and will tell you the truth. It may be that He hasn’t purposed it to happen yet. The only way to know is to ask.
