Have you found a penny on the ground lately? I find one every now and then. I used to pass them by thinking why bother. Now I pick them up and see them as God’s little reminder to trust Him as I read “In God We Trust” imprinted on the coin.
As a child I used to like it when I would get a brand new, shiny penny. There was something about the sparkle of it that I found more attractive than a dirty, old penny. It made no sense because the value of it was the same, but I was attracted to the new one. It was clean.
The sad reality is we’ve all treated people like that from time to time. Some of us are more attracted to the new people in our lives. Some of us are attracted to powerful people. Others are attracted to the “pretty” people. And still others are attracted to popular people. I’m not sure what attracts us to one type of person verses another. Thankfully, the Lord values us all the same. Just as a shiny penny and one covered in mud maintain the same value, in God’s eyes someone who has committed rape or murder is just as precious to Him as the pastor of the church on the hill. He wants us all to be with Him for eternity [Matthew 18:14]. John 3:16 says,
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Whoever means whoever. It includes nuns, Bible study leaders, thieves and prostitutes. There is no one Jesus wants to see go to hell. None!
Jesus will never love you anymore than He does right now and He will never love you any less than He does right now.
Our actions and words do not determine our value; He does and He says we are ALL priceless. We are ALL worth His life. If you were the only one on earth, He still would have gone to the cross for you.
He gives us opportunity after opportunity to be like Him in how we treat people. How do you speak to the waitress that serves you? How do you respond to the taxi cab driver, even if he’s rude to you? How do you treat your spouse? What about the crabby neighbor across the street?
The value of anything is determined by the price someone is willing to pay.”
Jesus said we’re all priceless. What do you say? Remember, actions speak louder than words.
