peaceWhen was the last time you had a nightmare? I can’t remember the last time I experienced one until last night. I woke from a deep sleep last night in a cold sweat, and it wasn’t a hot flash. I was physically trembling. The dream seemed so real. I looked around trying to determine where I was and if it was, in fact, reality.

I knew there was no hope of sleep without talking through this with my husband (yes, guys, we even have to talk through things in the middle of the night). I woke him up and told him what happened. I have to say I married the best man ever. He took me in his arms and immediately, before saying a word to me, invited the Holy Spirit’s presence to be with us, then he began to pray over me. While it took a while for me to cease trembling and go back to sleep, peace settle upon me the moment he began praying.

Philippians 4:7 says,

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” [emphasis mine]

No matter what your circumstances, the peace of God is available to you. You simply have to request it. James 4:2 says,

You do not have, because you do not ask God.”

I do not believe James is saying God is like Santa Claus where we can ask and get whatever we want. I believe we can ask for things He has already promised us and have confidence we will receive it. Jesus promised us His peace in John 14:27,

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Because Jesus has already offered His peace to us, it is there for the taking, all we have to do is request it.

The next time you are faced with a crisis, call out to the One who can step into your situation and bring His peace with Him. You’ll be glad you did.
