How many of you look in the mirror and find something you don’t like? We all seem to have an area or two we don’t like about our appearance. Women are far worse at it than men; however, men are guilty too. Have you ever stopped to think about what you are really saying when you criticize yourself?
Genesis 1:26 says,
Then God said, “Let us make man in Our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
Each of us is created in the image of God. When we criticize the image we see looking back at us in the mirror, we are criticizing God and His craftsmanship.
Psalm 139:14 says,
I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
We weren’t an after thought. He took time creating us. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us God has plans for us. He created us for the plans He has for us.
Growing up, my brothers would tell me I had a big mouth. After a while, I began claiming that description and would even say things like me and my big mouth whenever I would let something slip out that shouldn’t. After I became a Christian, I started reading the Word and trying to embrace it. My brothers would still tell me I had a big mouth. In fact, my older brother used to say there were two forms of communication: telephone and tell-a-Susan. He continued to tell me I had a big mouth, but I started responding,
Well, I guess God has big things He wants me to say.”
Little did I know I was speaking prophetically about the call God had upon my life. Now when I speak at events, I thank God for the way He created me. I know I can be loud, but there are times I am speaking at an event and a microphone isn’t working or isn’t available. Because of the way God created me, it isn’t a problem. I can teach and everyone can hear.
Take a minute today and think about the things you’ve deemed wrong with yourself. Ask God to show you why He made you the way He did.
God has a purpose for everything He does. He wastes nothing. He has plans and a purpose for you and the way He created you. It was by design, not mistake. Dive deep into His Word and see what He has in store for you. You’ll be on the adventure of a lifetime.
