Do you meet new people on a regular basis? The work I do provides the opportunity to meet new people weekly if not daily. Some of them are brief encounters while others are longer. Nonetheless, each encounter serves a purpose.
I never pass up the opportunity to meet someone new, hear their story and learn from them.
We can learn something from everyone if we’ll willing to take the time to sit and listen. Everyone is an expert about something, even if it is only about their own life experiences. We can glean something from listening, asking questions, and engaging in conversation.
I’ve met people from all walks of life and they have each brought their own color or flavor to my life, making it fuller. I never know when I meet someone for the first time if they’re going to be a part of my life for a day or a decade. What I do know is I have an opportunity, even if only this one, to be light and salt. I have the chance to be Jesus with skin on if I’ll yield to Him and allow Him to speak, listen and love through me.
Matthew 5:14-16 says,
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
It is amazing how one small candle can push the darkness out of a room. You never know where someone is coming from when you meet them. They may be in a good place spiritually speaking and love the Lord beyond words. But they also may be in complete and utter darkness. Your encounter with them, even if it is just one, can be the catalyst to draw them to Jesus.
You don’t have to have all the answers, He does. You don’t need to try and change them, that’s His job. You simply need to listen, love them, treat them as someone with worth and value. You don’t need to bring an agenda with you, because He’s got that covered too. All He asks is that you be willing to be a vessel for Him to shine through.
Where will you shine your light today?
