DO YOU HAVE A BIG BUT?

Do you have a big but? I'm not talking about your backside. That would be your butt, and we won't go there. I'm asking if there's a but in your life that is keeping you from believing what God's telling you or what He's asking you to do. Abraham is viewed as the father of the Christian faith. In Genesis 15:5, God takes Abram outside to look at the stars and declares that his descendants will be as numerous, He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars-- if indeed you can count them." Then [...]

Are you prepared to take a stand?

Are you standing firm in your faith? The phrase, take a stand, means: to take a position in opposition to someone or something; to oppose or resist someone or something." Many people today blast their opinions on Twitter and Facebook, simply based on what they've read online or what they've see others share. Few people take the time to investigate and find the source of the information to determine if it is accurate or not before speaking out for or against it. Yesterday, I had the privilege of listening to my daughter deliver a message to a youth group about standing [...]

How to Make the Impossible Possible

The cookbook from my Southern Elementary School class. Photo credit: Rebecca Fleming Do you remember your kindergarten teacher? I never attended kindergarten, but I taught kindergarten. I loved my students dearly. They were fun. They were trusting. They were adventurous. I could have walked in the door and told my class we were going to climb on the roof and learn to fly and I think they would have cheered and followed me. They trusted me. They believed in me; therefore, they followed me. As a result, our year together was filled with fun and adventure. As [...]

It’s time!

What is your favorite part of the day? Are you a morning person? Do you jump up quickly when you hear the beeping of your alarm clock? Or are you more a middle of the day person. You like being in the midst of the grind with people around you and the buzz of the day? Could it be the evening? Coming home and propping your feet up at the end of a long day? Me? I prefer mornings. I love sunrises, because they are a promise of new light, new life, and new beginnings. I like the quiet of a [...]

What do you believe?

Photo by Donna Kay Johnson What do you believe? Do you know? Could you defend or explain it if asked? 1 Peter 3:15 says, But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect," With everything going on in our world today, it is important to know what you believe. You can't cling to what your parents or grandparents believe, or even what your pastor or best friend believes. You [...]

God’s Not Dead

Have you seen the movie, God's Not Dead yet? It is a story of a young college student, Josh Wheaton, who is challenged by an atheist professor to declare God is dead. When the student refuses to do so, the professor tells him he'd better be prepared to debate and defend his position and if he fails to do so, he fails the class. This picture is very exciting for Riverstone Church, because our worship pastor, Daniel Bashta, wrote the theme song. It was first made popular by David Crowder. He discovered it on Youtube and played it for the first time [...]

Can you believe it?

Do you believe God is for you? Do you believe He hears your prayers and answers them? Many people pray and hope instead of pray and believe. Even the disciples were guilty of this. In Mark 4:35-41 they were caught in a terrible storm that threatened to overtake their boat, while Jesus was asleep in the stern. They frantically woke Him up and said, Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" They never doubted if He was able to save them, but their question indicated they weren’t sure He was willing or even cared. Tom Tanner said, Faith isn’t knowing [...]

Isn’t it time you know who you are?

Have you ever seen the movie Princess Diaries 2? If you have daughter, chances are it's one of many princess movies you've seen.  My daughter and I have watched that movie so many times I could almost quote it. Yesterday during my prayer time, the Lord brought a particular scene from that movie to mind. It's when princess Mia stopped the parade through town.  Rather than tell you about it, allow me to show it to you: Princess Mia didn't ask anyone's permission to stop the parade. She halted the parade because she became aware of an injustice. She witnessed [...]

POSSIBLE!

Has God ever asked you to do or believe something that seems ridiculous, far-fetched or impossible? He did of Joshua. Joshua 6:1-2 says, Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in. Then the LORD said to Joshua, "See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men.” Jericho was a fortified city.  As I was researching the walls of Jericho, I read, The mound, or “tell” of Jericho was surrounded by a great earthen rampart, or embankment, with a stone retaining wall at [...]
