SAME RIVER SAME WORD

Have you ever been kayaking down a river? I fell in love with kayaking on a family vacation several years ago and when my son said he wanted to do something special together before he went off to graduate school, I knew what I wanted to do. We spent a morning kayaking down the Chestatee River in Dahlonega, Georgia. It was such a quiet, peaceful morning. There was only one other kayak on the river as we made our way down stream, which was probably good since we didn't really know what we were doing. I may or may not have [...]

DO YOU HAVE A BIG BUT?

Do you have a big but? I'm not talking about your backside. That would be your butt, and we won't go there. I'm asking if there's a but in your life that is keeping you from believing what God's telling you or what He's asking you to do. Abraham is viewed as the father of the Christian faith. In Genesis 15:5, God takes Abram outside to look at the stars and declares that his descendants will be as numerous, He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars-- if indeed you can count them." Then [...]

ATTENTION!

What do you give your time and attention to? What do you focus on? Another way of asking that question is what are your priorities? My mother used to always say, You make time for things that matter to you." Think about it for a minute... If your boss told you something has to get done today, you're going to do whatever you need to in order to accomplish the task. It suddenly became your top priority of the day. Nothing else matters until you get that task completed, because your job may depend on it. It's become not just [...]

Do you have a tool I can borrow?

Do you have a tool chest? Is it full or are you continually adding new tools to it? My husband bought a Craftsman tool chest because he had outgrown his smaller toolbox and needed a place to store all of his tools together. We all have tools we use in life. Some of us have tools like a paint brush, a guitar pick, a computer or even a chef's knife. What kind of tools do you use in your line of work? Last night I hosted a new Bible study in my home. We are using the book The Circle Maker by Mark [...]

The Perfect Thing to Feast on First Thing in the Morning!

Do you wake hungry? I woke up this morning thinking about what I could eat. It was almost as if I hadn't eaten in days. Before 6 a.m. this morning I was making baked oatmeal and anticipating the flavors. I started grabbing fruit and nuts to add to yogurt on top of it. Do you wake up anticipating the Word of God the same way? I had to ask myself that question today. Do I anticipate a bite of the Word the way I was anticipating a bite of that baked oatmeal?" Do I understand the necessity of feeding my spirit [...]

“How did God get born?”

Do you have nieces and nephews? I'm blessed enough to have four nephews and three nieces. I love them all dearly and try to stay in touch with them often. The older ones are either in college or out in the workforce, so it isn't as easy to connect with them. They have busy lives of their own, always on the go. The younger three (6 and under) are out west in Colorado, so while we can Skype or talk on the phone, we don't get a lot of time together. I try to check in with my Colorado family [...]

Why are people surprised?

GQ Magazine Online Were you surprised by Duck Dynasty's Phil Roberston's stance on homosexuality? It's all over Facebook and Twitter. He's had more media coverage for being who he is than many celebrities get for not being who we thought they were. Phil is outspoken and firm in his beliefs. He's been that way long before the cameras from A & E found their way onto his property. As the old saying goes, Walks like a duck, talks like a duct... must be a duck." Sorry.  I couldn't resist. Phil Robertson is a Christian and he doesn't hide it. [...]

Why do we do it?

What are your favorite Christmas traditions? I asked my daughter this question at breakfast and she didn't hesitate with her answer. It's a tie. I love how we get a new Christmas ornament given to us each year because they represent our life as we have grown up, what we've loved. I also love when our family gathers around Christmas Eve to read the Bible story of the first Christmas. Hands down, those are my favorite traditions." I love everything about Christmas. I can't choose a favorite tradition because they're all special to me.  I love learning the story behind [...]

Guess what I learned listening to my son’s music?

What kind of music do you listen to? I like contemporary Christian, country music, rock and roll, worship music, beach music, easy listening, and even some classical.  I would have to say, I am not a fan of rap music... well, that is until today. Much of the rap music out there today sings of the degradation and objectification of women.  In many cases the songs glorify pimping, drugs and violence. The survivors of human sex trafficking I know have shared how rap music was all their pimps played, much of it very violent in nature. This morning I grabbed [...]

3 Steps to a Healthy Summer

What is your favorite part about summer? Is it the warmer temperatures? Not having a set schedule or routine? Vacations? If you don't have school age children, then the highlight might be less traffic on the roads during your morning commute. I love summertime. I love it all.  I love having my children home.  I love grilling out or going on picnics. I love the laid back atmosphere that seems to linger no matter where you are.  Everyone just seems more relaxed during summertime. Do you find when you don't have a daily routine it's easy to let a few [...]
