Are you really thankful for THAT?

What comes to mind when you think of November? Do you think about Thanksgiving or are you like American retailers and immediately jump from Halloween to Christmas? Do you think of Pilgrims and Indians, turkey, or pumpkin pie? One thing I miss about teaching elementary school is the large celebrations of any and every holiday. Children will embrace them all. November was always one of my favorite times of year teaching because we talked a lot about the birth of our nation. Many people think Thanksgiving was celebrated as a time to be thankful for coming to a new land [...]

Obedience is the Key!

Are you a parent? If you aren't a parent, you had one. What would you say is the most common disciplinary phrase said by all parents at least once in their parenting career? Is it, "No!" or "Come here!" or what about my all time favorite I've heard parents say over and over, Because I said so!" That one always got me as a child. Does that mean there is no valid reason other than your desires? Now, before you get all riled up, I'm guilty of saying it too. It just really bugged me when I did. So I [...]

Walking Out Maya Angelou’s Wisdom

Are you familiar with Maya Angelou? She was an amazing woman. She authored several books, poems, plays, and was a well known speaker. She carried herself with grace, wisdom and poise that was matchless. She never seemed to be in a hurry to speak or act; rather, she was known for a thoughtful pause as she chose her words wisely. When she did speak, her words carried authority, power, and punch. Maya Angelou died Wednesday and our nation will forever be marked by her. She's known for many fabulous quotes, but one of my favorites of hers is, Be a [...]

Give me patience, but hurry up!

How do you define patience? Wikipedia defines patience as, the state of endurance under difficult circumstances, which can mean persevering in the face of delay or provocation without acting on annoyance/anger in a negative way; or exhibiting forbearance when under strain, especially when faced with longer-term difficulties. Very few people seem to exhibit patience anymore. We have evolved into an instant gratification world.  Instead of taking the time to prepare delicious  meals for our families, we rely on microwaves and drive-thru windows with no control over what is in the food we're feeding them. Instead of investing time and energy [...]

Is it time to clip the hedges?

Do crepe myrtles grow where you live? I live in Georgia where they grow on just about every corner. Every spring, you will see people cutting them back, in some cases, where only twigs remain. Yet, in early spring, the growth and color are amazing. My dad is notorious for doing the same thing to the scrubs in my parent’s front yard. Whenever my mother asks him to trim the scrubs, he practically mows them down to the stump. While they look scrawny and awful for a year, they eventually thrive and look SO healthy. He uses that as justification [...]
