Whose boat are you in?

What is your pastor teaching on during this Christmas season? Our church finished up a study of the book of Acts yesterday. Pastor Tom shared from Acts 27 and 28 yesterday. He talked of how Paul was on a ship caught in a horrible storm and it appeared all was lost, including the lives of everyone on board. Paul stepped up to the plate and told everyone on board they wouldn't die. In a time when he was the odd man out, he was willing to step up and speak truth, even though the circumstances didn't point to the truth [...]

Be the Key!

My favorite chair in my office. What does your office look like? Mine is a collection of the places and people I've served in ministry. My favorite chair in my office was a gift to me from the students I served in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). It is draped with a quilt that was gifted to me from the Adullam Orphanage in Ghana, West Africa, where I serve when I go. In the back of the chair is a pillow from Daughters of Hope, a factory in India I toured that helps employ destitute women. To the side [...]

Fill ‘er up!

What kind of car do you drive? I drive a 2000 Honda Odyssey minivan. It has close to 275,000 miles on it and about as many stories. I've driven it like a pickup truck up and down the mountain roads of north Georgia when we had a mountain cabin on Carter's Lake. I've driven it to more little league baseball games, cheerleading practices, lacrosse games and football games than I can count. I've hauled students to and from Fellowship of Christian Athlete meetings and leadership camps for years. This van has been a part of our family story for fifteen [...]

Why not come sit for a while?

Are you a MercyMe fan? I love their music. There is a song they've recorded called If I Could Just Sit With You A While. It was written and originally recorded by Dennis Jernigan, which is who I first heard sing it. He is a very talented songwriter and singer and he has a beautiful testimony of deliverance. I had the privilege of sharing a platform with Dennis Jernigan at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes President's Weekend several years ago. It had been years since I had heard him sing and it was just as powerful as I remembered. God [...]

What do you believe?

Photo by Donna Kay Johnson What do you believe? Do you know? Could you defend or explain it if asked? 1 Peter 3:15 says, But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect," With everything going on in our world today, it is important to know what you believe. You can't cling to what your parents or grandparents believe, or even what your pastor or best friend believes. You [...]

Do you see it?

How many of you would say you've seen sex trafficking take place? Anyone? How many of you would say you've seen some things that just didn't look right but you didn't know what to do? Sex trafficking is all around us. Called the crime hidden in plain site, it may be hard to identify if you don't know what you're looking for. I didn't just decide one day I would start fighting against sex trafficking. I honestly didn't know it was taking place in my nation, my city, or basically my backyard, until I learned the indicators. I had been working [...]

Do you know the indicators?

Were you ever a part of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, also known as FCA? They did not have FCA in my high school growing up. My introduction to it was when my son was in sixth grade. He started asking to attend and I decided to find out all I could about the organization. They meet in middle schools and high schools across the country, usually once a week before school. Their mission is simple, To present to coaches and athletes, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him [...]

I finally went to jail…….

"Have you ever been to jail?" That was the question I asked my pastor two years ago when I was trying to find a way to visit a young woman charged with prostitution who called me. It's much harder than you think to get into jail when you aren't the one incarcerated.  However, yesterday, I made my first visit to the jail. The mother of a young inmate contacted me after reading Rescuing Hope to tell me, I'm Amanda, Hope's mother. My daughter is being prostituted." While every girl brought to my attention is heartbreaking, this one was especially so [...]

Just do it!

Do you always do what you're told to do? The first time? I remember when my children were little, we taught them how important first time obedience was and held them to that standard.  We were blessed, because they caught on quickly and rarely rebelled.  Unfortunately, God can't say the same about me. I've been asked why a suburban housewife and mother of two felt compelled to write Rescuing Hope and how I ever got into the whole human sex trafficking arena. My response is, "Not by choice."  I'd like to tell you all that I took up this cause for justice willingly, but [...]
