Be the Key!

My favorite chair in my office. What does your office look like? Mine is a collection of the places and people I've served in ministry. My favorite chair in my office was a gift to me from the students I served in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). It is draped with a quilt that was gifted to me from the Adullam Orphanage in Ghana, West Africa, where I serve when I go. In the back of the chair is a pillow from Daughters of Hope, a factory in India I toured that helps employ destitute women. To the side [...]

Lest We Forget

Do you like to sing old hymns? With all of the contemporary worship out there, hymns seem to be few and far between in church services today. Thankfully, there are some contemporary worship leaders who have woven them into their music sets. Others, like David Crowder and Chris Tomlin, have even recorded a few, such Amazing Grace and O Thou Fount of Every Blessing. There are some song lyrics people have to think about to grasp their meaning. Like in one of my favorite songs, O How He Loves, there are people who have inquired about the line,  if grace is an [...]

Do you remember?

Do you have a favorite Christmas decoration? Something you pull out year after year that represents a special person or place? I love my nativity scenes. I have started collecting them. I have a nativity scene made out of olive wood from the Holy Land a friend brought me back from her trip there. When I look at this particular nativity scene, it makes me think of my dear friend but it also causes me to long for the day when I will be able to go to Israel and see the sights for myself. I have a hand carved [...]

Will you answer?

Have you seen the commercial that says Asheville is calling? If not, here is it. The announcer says, Asheville's calling. Will you answer it? Come and explore Asheville and dance to the beat of a different drum." Well my cellphone has not received a phone call from Asheville beckoning me to return there, but I yesterday I did receive a phone call form Ghana yesterday. I think Ghana trumps Asheville. Just sayin'. It was my dear friend, Eddie Nsafoa. He and I minister together when I travel to Ghana. He picks my team up at the airport and he is with [...]

Full Body Search

Have you ever been searched by airport security? Depending on where you've traveled, it can be quite an ordeal. I've had the American search, which is a light tapping on your body. It takes a couple of seconds and you're on your way. But I've also had the Ghanaian search, which is one step short of a cavity search. Let's put it this way, the woman knew far more about me than anyone else in Ghana. The purpose for the search is for safety measures. They are looking for things they couldn't find with the naked eye. They're looking to [...]

Now THAT’S a reason to chant, USA!

Have you heard? Are you celebrating? No, I'm not here to report a win for the US Soccer Team in the World Cup. I'm here to report something bigger, better. A three day cross country sting, named Operation Cross Country, targeted 106 US cities and brought the arrest of 281 pimps and the rescue of 168 children being sold for one person's twisted pleasure and another's financial gain. Now that is something to jump up and down about. That is a reason to chant, USA! USA! USA!" Don't get me wrong. I love sports and I was sitting in a [...]

How are you carrying it?

Do you like quotes? I have a notebook of my favorite quotes. Some of them are from famous people, like Billy Graham, Mother Teresa , or Bill Cosby. Others are things friends of mine or pastors have said that hold a great deal of meaning for me, so I wrote them down. This morning I came across this quote by Lena Horne and had to ponder it a minute. It's weighty. It carries a lot of truth. I thought back to last week when Atlanta was hit by the snow and ice so quickly, leaving hundreds of drivers stranded on the [...]

Three ways to fulfill your purpose…

Do you know a missionary? We have friends who served in Ghana, West Africa for eleven years. We had the opportunity to take short term mission teams to work with them during their time there. It was amazing to see how God used them to reach the people of Ghana. During the eleven years they served in Ghana, they lived life along side the locals, attending the same churches, schools and shopping in the same marketplace. They lived life, but they did so intentionally. Acts 1:8 speaks about being God's witness.  It says, But you will receive power when [...]

Are you shining?

Do you ever go outside and look at the stars at night? Living in a large city with lots of street lights, buildings lit up and even billboards make it hard to truly appreciate the stars sometimes. I enjoy being in the mountains or at the beach, where there's no competition for the majesty of the stars. I'm not really into astrology or the science behind stars, I just love the beauty of a star-filled night. When I was in Africa on a mission trip I was convinced God had placed thousands upon thousands more stars in the sky after [...]

Will you walk through it?

Door of No Return in the Elmina Castle, Ghana Are you a visual person?  When you read things, do you picture them in your mind?  I have a very vivid imagination and it doesn't matter if I'm reading a novel or a newspaper article, I picture what I'm reading.  I love it when I actually come across something in life that is a picture of something I've read, particularly Scripture. This happened when I toured the Elmina Castle in Ghana, West Africa. Matthew 7:13-14 says, Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is [...]
