Guess what I learned listening to my son’s music?

What kind of music do you listen to? I like contemporary Christian, country music, rock and roll, worship music, beach music, easy listening, and even some classical.  I would have to say, I am not a fan of rap music... well, that is until today. Much of the rap music out there today sings of the degradation and objectification of women.  In many cases the songs glorify pimping, drugs and violence. The survivors of human sex trafficking I know have shared how rap music was all their pimps played, much of it very violent in nature. This morning I grabbed [...]

How do you overcome your fear of public speaking?

Are you afraid of speaking before a large group? What about a smaller audience of one or two people?  The fear of public speaking, or glossophobia,  is one of the most common fears among people.  In fact, it is said that 74% of all people suffer from this fear.  This fear can be the result of many factors, such as anxiety over being viewed as having nothing worthy to say, feeling inferior to the audience, or feeling like you'll be made fun of for what you've shared. Recently, I read an article about  a survivor of human sex trafficking who [...]

How to go from impossible to possible in one easy step:

What do you do when something seems impossible? Do you throw in the towel and walk away? Or do you look at it as an opportunity?  Do you like a good challenge? I remember the day God called me to step into the fight against human sex trafficking in America.  I thought I'd lost my mind.  Surely, God didn't just tell me I was going to become a voice for this issue. What could possibly qualify me to speak out against this issue? His answer was loud and clear, Me." How do you argue with that? Then I tried the [...]

What will you choose to do?

Atlanta LIVE Have you ever been interviewed on television?  Last night was a first for me.  I was on Atlanta Live, where I talked about my book, Rescuing Hope, and the issue of human sex trafficking in America. They sent over a lengthy form I had to fill out along with wardrobe and makeup suggestions.  Needless to say, I was a nervous wreck by the time I arrived. I met the host, Pastor Vincent, in the green room and we immediately hit it off, bantering back and forth.  The studio was pitch black except for the actual set, which was [...]

Are you doing your part?

Antico Pizza in Atlanta How did you spent your Memorial Day? My husband and I had dinner at Antico, an Italian pizza place I've been wanting to try for a while now.  It was very simple inside.  We ordered our pizza and beverages at the counter and then we were directed to the kitchen where they had large family style farm table seating.  Multiple parties would share one table. The staff worked like a fine tuned machine, everyone doing their task, and they turned out pizza after pizza with what appeared to be little effort on any one [...]

How to Speak a Foreign Language Without Ever Taking a Class

Do you speak a foreign language?  I wish I did; however, I took Latin in high school and wasn't required to take a foreign language in college.  I learned basic American Sign Language so I could have hearing impaired students mainstreamed into my classroom, but that's as close to speaking another language as I got. This Sunday our pastor was teaching from Acts 2 when I had an epiphany.  I can speak a foreign language of sorts.  In Acts 2:4-8 says, All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there [...]

It’s time to kill the serpent!

Do you like snakes?  I cannot stand them. I tend to avoid them at all costs. I did; however, have one come into my house once.  Scared me half to death. My son wanted to chop him up, in my kitchen. Needless to say, I didn't allow that to happen. We did managed to get it out of the house, but not without some drama. You can read about it here. Snakes are curious things.  If you do go to kill them by chopping them, you have to severe the head from the body.  You cannot just cut the tail [...]

Do you want to be a Superhero?

Did you grow up watching the super heroes on television?  I have two brothers, so I saw nearly every episode of Batman, Superman, The Incredible Hulk, and more.  We also watched Wonder Woman. Even as young children, we all like to believe there are people in the world who will go the extra mile to help others. We all need a hero. Unfortunately, they seem harder and harder to find in our world. There are people who will gladly give and do for those they deem worthy, but there are others who never seem to catch a break, never have [...]

Play Ball!

Do you like baseball?  My husband, Mark, loves baseball.  He played baseball as a child all the way through high school.  His father was the commissioner of baseball where he grew up.  He taught our son, Sam, to play baseball and when Sam developed a love for the sport, Mark coached until Sam stopped playing in middle school.  He loves baseball.  More than anything, I think the real attraction for him to baseball is the strategy and teamwork required to play the game well. No one player is more important than any other.  While you need your pitcher to throw strikes, [...]

“Why do I need to know about this?”

"Why do I need to know about this?" That's what I overheard someone say as I stood outside of the sanctuary at Wesley United Methodist Church about to speak on the issue of sex trafficking in America.  It's a legitimate question and one most ask, whether out loud or not.  Why do we need to learn all we can about this heinous crime? What can we do about it? As I started to walk into the sanctuary, I had a little talk with Jesus.  He and I are like that; we talk.  Whenever I'm in need of help, which is [...]
