What does tax day mean to you?

Did you get your taxes done? April 15th has a way of making people stressed out and a bit nervous sometimes. It's that dreaded day when the government, both state and federal, expects a full report of your financial situation. They want to make sure you're giving them their cut of your earnings. April 15th holds a different meaning to me. Eighteen years ago on this day, we said see you later to a very dear woman in my life, Ann Payne, known to all who loved her as Mama Payne. Mama Payne was not related to our family in any way [...]

Happy Mother’s Day!

Are you ready for Mother's Day? This Sunday will mark my 20th Mother's Day of being a mom. I have loved every minute of it, even the hard times. My children have been a huge blessing to my life and have become two of my very best friends. I remember the day I became a mom, I sat in the bed and cried saying, What if I screw him up? What if I don't do it right?" After all, motherhood is one of those jobs you learn on the job. There's very little preparation available for you. Yet, I realize, [...]

Drink deep; it’s gonna be a long day!

Do you like yard work? My grandmother had the most beautiful yard. It would have rivaled any cover of Southern Living Magazine. She would spend hours and hours in her yard before most people finished breakfast. She had as many colors splashed across her yard as a Crayola Crayon Box. It was stunning. Me, I did not inherit her green thumb. I used to consider buying silk flowers and sticking them in the ground because everything I planted would look great for about three days and then die. When discussing this with my mother several years ago, she laughed and [...]

Spa anyone?

Have you ever been to a spa party? A dear friend of mine is a new consultant for Lemongrass Spa, so I agreed to host her launch party. It has been a decade since I've hosted a home party. When my children were little, home parties were my outlet to the adult world. It was one of the few times when Cheerios and Goldfish weren't on the snack table. A chance for adult conversation was enough of a reason to host a party. I think I hosted about every kind of home party on the market at the time: Pampered [...]

Isn’t it time you know who you are?

Have you ever seen the movie Princess Diaries 2? If you have daughter, chances are it's one of many princess movies you've seen.  My daughter and I have watched that movie so many times I could almost quote it. Yesterday during my prayer time, the Lord brought a particular scene from that movie to mind. It's when princess Mia stopped the parade through town.  Rather than tell you about it, allow me to show it to you: Princess Mia didn't ask anyone's permission to stop the parade. She halted the parade because she became aware of an injustice. She witnessed [...]

How did you celebrate?

Hello? Did you spend yesterday with your mother? Both my mother and my mother-in-law live out of town, so I was unable to be with them; yet, I talked with both of them at length and showered them cards and gifts. I was blessed to spend the day with my daughter and my husband, but my son left Friday for his study abroad experience.  Thanks to the use of technology, I was able to spend some time with him via Skype.  It was great to see him and talk with him.  Just as we disconnected, my cell phone [...]

How Duck Dynasty Can Help Your Relationships

Do you ever watch Duck Dynasty? After seeing many posts on Facebook a few months ago, I decided to watch it and see what everyone was talking about.  I’ve been watching it ever since then.  The Robertson brothers remind me of some of my older brother’s high school friends. Si Robertson can make me laugh at the drop of a hat. The season finale was this week and the whole redneck family took a trip to Hawaii. You can imagine how hilarious it was to witness this clan of bearded back woods individuals in a five star resort in paradise. [...]
