Moldable?

North Carolina Pottery Do you like pottery? One of my favorite things about going home to North Carolina is the pottery. There is a town about an hour from my parent's house called Seagrove that is filled with potters, some of them are third and fourth generation potters. I have been many times and have collected some beautiful pieces through the years. Cagle's Pottery is one of my favorite places to visit. Their family has been throwing pottery on the wheel since 1791 It is quality craftsmanship. The white scalloped bowl pictured is from Cagle's. Another favorite of mine [...]

Memory Lane to heartache- Can you relate?

Greensboro, North Carolina Do you ever venture down Memory Lane? Where does it take you? I spent this past week with my parents in my hometown. It was such fun, visiting some of my favorite places and connecting with friends I haven't seen in a while. I was able to grab lunch at Yum Yums with one of my college friends and walk through campus enjoying their amazing ice cream as we walked. My mother and I celebrated her birthday at one of my favorite lunch spots, Liberty Oak. While I was in town, I had the opportunity to connect [...]

Children should be found in schools, not brothels!

It's about that time again. You know the time.... when traffic in the city feels like it's doubled because you have to encounter Big Yellow everywhere you go. Who is Big Yellow? Big Yellow is the school bus and he seems to be everywhere and always, somehow, in front of you slowing down your frantic race to your next destination. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it's back to school time. For me, a North Carolinian, it seems way to early to be sending children to school. In North Carolina the summer months are June, July and August. They even passed a [...]

Shark Attacks Happening Closer Than You Think

Holden Beach, North Carolina Have you been to the beach this summer? I've had the opportunity to go twice. My immediately family went to St. Augustine for a couple of days and then I traveled to the NC coast to see my brother's family for a few days. My niece and nephew and I would go on treasure hunts each morning as we walked along the beach to see what we could find. My niece and I came upon a fisherman who caught a three foot shark. Thankfully for us, the shark was out of the water, on the [...]

Do you need a good warshing?

North Carolina Farmer's Market Have you purchased a pumpkin this fall? They seem to come in all shapes and sizes and come with a variety of price tags too. I like to create a colorful display of pumpkins and gourds on my front porch, but it can become costly. I've started buying my unique colored and shaped pumpkins and gourds at the Farmer's Market and then stopping by Walmart for my traditional orange, round pumpkin, because I can get it there for $4. I'm trying to be a good steward of what God gives me. A couple of [...]

What would you say?

What would you say to someone if you knew your time with them was short? I remember the summer before my son went off to college like it was yesterday. He was so ready for college. Let's face it, he was ready for college in elementary school. He has loved learning his whole life. He loves adventure and the idea of having so many choices for classes and meeting a wide variety of people from around the country and world excited him. I remember looking at him one day and thinking, I only have days left with him before he's gone. [...]

What is He shaping you into?

Sarah Wells Rolland Do you like pottery? I not only love pottery, but I am fascinated by the process of throwing clay on a potter's wheel. I'm amazed by the skilled hands taking a clump of clay and turning it into a masterpiece. I grew up in North Carolina close to Seagrove where third and forth generation potters live. With the help of maps, you can drive through the back woods of Seagrove and find some amazing artists. It used to be a frequent stop of mine on my way to the beach. It's been years since I've [...]

Who are you?

Who are you? That's the question we asked ourselves on the Wesley UMC Ladies Retreat in Asheville, North Carolina this weekend. It seems like a simple enough question until you take a deeper look. Most of us identify ourselves by the people we're associated with: I'm a mother. I'm a wife. I'm a daughter. I'm a sister. Or we identify ourselves with a job or role we hold: I'm a teacher, lawyer, lunch lady, receptionist, etc. I'm PTA president. I'm a coach. I'm a piano teacher. But many of those things change over time. So, do they really define us? [...]

How far will you travel?

Do you travel during the holidays? Our travel consists of seeing family. My parents live in North Carolina, about six hours away. My older brother lives five hours from me and my baby brother lives across the country in Colorado. I don't want to even think about how long of a drive that would be. If I travel there, it's by plane. It's not always convenient nor does it always fit in the budget to travel, but we do because our family is important to us. We're willing to sacrifice and/or be inconvenienced to spend time with them. We love [...]

What is one thing we all desire in life?

Do you know the Golden Rule? I would venture to guess most people are familiar with it, even those who aren't believers in Christ. It can be found in Luke 6:31, Do to others as you would have them do to you." Matthew 7:12 also records it and goes so far as to say the Golden Rule sums up the Law and the Prophets. This morning as I was reading an article about North Carolina holding a symposium on human trafficking for law enforcement, I couldn't help but think of the Golden Rule. What is one thing we all desire [...]
