Is something leaking?

Where is the hot water heater in your house? Is it outside, under the house or is it inside your garage? Possibly in a closet somewhere? Ours is in a garage closet. Because of limited storage space, we have a refrigerator that sits in front of the closet. This morning my husband happened to notice water on the garage floor. Upon further investigation, he discovered the water wasn't coming from the refrigerator, as he first thought; rather the water was coming from the hot water heater. Needless to say, we have a plumber on the way to determine the damage [...]

What’s for sale in the window where you live?

Do you ever go window shopping? There don't seem to be as many storefront windows as there used to be. I remember when my grandmother worked in retail, the storefront window was all the rage. It was long before social media was created, not mention used for advertising. Yesterday, I had the privilege of taking three precious ladies to the Atlanta Mart for some Christmas shopping. We shopped almost every one of the eighteen floors of the Gift Mart before heading over to the Apparel Mart. Not all of the showrooms are open, so you can make fast time, unless [...]

Problem or Solution?

How observant are you? Have you ever tested it? When I took a self defense training class with Powerhouse Self-Defense, one of the things the instructor tested was our observation skills. We were given a picture to look at for a few seconds and then we were asked to list all of the objects we saw in the picture. Next we looked at picture for a few seconds then given an altered picture and had to identify the missing items from the original photograph. Most participants learned they weren't very observant. Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons conducted a study on selective attention. Their findings are referred to [...]

What do you do when the problem is so huge?

Have you read Rescuing Hope? Have you been to an event where the keynote speaker talked about the issue of sex trafficking in America? It can be overwhelming when you think of the magnitude of the issue. 100,000 trafficked in the United States, the majority of those American citizens. 300,000 at risk of being trafficked. 27+ million slaves in the known world today. What do you do with those staggering numbers? How do you respond? The same way you eat an elephant... one bite at a time. We raise our voice, demanding stiffer penalties for perpetrators and more services for [...]

Is it a problem or an opportunity in disguise?

Do you answer your phone when you don't recognize the number calling? I tend to let those roll to voicemail. I assume if it's someone who needs to speak with me, they'll leave a message. I it's a telemarketer, I won't have to talk with them. This Saturday morning as I was walking through the farmer's market, my phone rang. I looked to see who was calling. While I didn't recognize the number, I did notice it was a number that had called me multiple times over the past two weeks, so I answered it. Good morning, Susan, I hope [...]

One step at a time…

Are you any good at math?  I have to say as far as academics go, mathematics isn't my strong suit.  I made decent grades in math in school, but I never soared above the class or made the highest grade on a test in any math class.  It was hard for me. Writing was more my comfort zone.  In college, I could land a 100 on an essay exam.  As I've said before, I have the spiritual gift of blab.  Math is another story. It wasn't until college that I ever enjoyed a math class. It had little to do [...]
