How to REALLY Keep that Colgate Grin

Do you go to the dentist regularly? As a young child my parents instilled the importance of taking care of our teeth and having regular dental check-ups. As incentive to brush our teeth every day and avoid sugar, my daddy told us we would earn $5 each time we came out of a check-up with no cavities. Obviously, that was a hundred years ago when $5 would purchase you more than a cup of coffee at Starbucks. In fact, when I would get that $5, I felt like the richest girl in the world. I mean, think of all the [...]

Is something leaking?

Where is the hot water heater in your house? Is it outside, under the house or is it inside your garage? Possibly in a closet somewhere? Ours is in a garage closet. Because of limited storage space, we have a refrigerator that sits in front of the closet. This morning my husband happened to notice water on the garage floor. Upon further investigation, he discovered the water wasn't coming from the refrigerator, as he first thought; rather the water was coming from the hot water heater. Needless to say, we have a plumber on the way to determine the damage [...]

Do you need a good warshing?

North Carolina Farmer's Market Have you purchased a pumpkin this fall? They seem to come in all shapes and sizes and come with a variety of price tags too. I like to create a colorful display of pumpkins and gourds on my front porch, but it can become costly. I've started buying my unique colored and shaped pumpkins and gourds at the Farmer's Market and then stopping by Walmart for my traditional orange, round pumpkin, because I can get it there for $4. I'm trying to be a good steward of what God gives me. A couple of [...]

What were you thinking?

Do you easily share your thoughts with others? Or do you keep them locked away in a secret place for no one but yourself? There's an old expression, A penny for your thoughts." The first time the phrase was documented in print was in the 1546 publication of John Heywood's book, The Proverbs of John Heywood. He was an English writer among other things. While you may or may not value a penny, you do need to value your thoughts and choose them carefully. God clearly states in His Word that our thoughts matter. The enemy is quite crafty and he [...]

Full Body Search

Have you ever been searched by airport security? Depending on where you've traveled, it can be quite an ordeal. I've had the American search, which is a light tapping on your body. It takes a couple of seconds and you're on your way. But I've also had the Ghanaian search, which is one step short of a cavity search. Let's put it this way, the woman knew far more about me than anyone else in Ghana. The purpose for the search is for safety measures. They are looking for things they couldn't find with the naked eye. They're looking to [...]

The Great Escape

Have you ever been to Serenbe Farms in Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia? It is a quaint little farm with an inn and several cabins for rent. They have horses, goats, sheep, donkeys, pigs, chickens, and that was just what I saw while I was there. They also have a massive garden where they grow most of what they serve in their restaurants in the community. The community is made up of restaurants, boutiques, a general store, a school, parks, and residential homes, among other things. Two of my good friends share the same birthday, so we made the trip to Serenbe [...]

The damage can be devastating!

The NEW hole in our house made by flying squirrels. Are you a home owner? Owning a home is a blessing, but it can come with it's fair share of challenges also. Our most recent challenge is flying squirrels. They've decided they'd like to live with us without paying rent. In fact, like any unwanted guest, they're a bit costly. I was getting ready very early one morning when I heard what sounded like a wrestling match taking place over my head. It was very obvious something was running around in our attic. After a quick call to [...]

What kind of lenses are you wearing?

How do you handle someone doing something wrong? Do you punish them? Do you call them out? Do you treat them differently? This morning, I read the following and was interested in your thoughts: In this African tribe, when someone does something harmful, they take the person to the center of the village where the whole tribe comes and surrounds them. At this point in the story, I fully expected the tribe to be like the Pharisees who brought the adulterous woman before Jesus ready to stone her to death [John 8:2-11]. What I discovered was completely different. For two [...]

Do you need an exterminator?

Did you ever live in an apartment in college? While many of my friends lived in apartments in college, I did not. One of my friends loves to tell the story of living in an apartment with multiple roommates at once, although only three of them were fellow guys, the other roommates were roaches. He said when he saw the first roach, he reacted as most people would, "Gross! Kill the thing." But then he became a little more comfortable with them in his apartment. He saw them, but he was busy doing other things so his response was more [...]

Bath Time

Bath Time Do you like a good joke? I do; however, sometimes I find myself laughing at corny ones.  I just heard a child call into the radio station to tell a joke: What do you call a fairy who won't take a bath? Stinker Belle Corny, I know, but what do you expect from a second grader? I'm sure he could relate to the joke. There's something about a bath that children loathe. They come up with all sorts of reasons why they don't want to or need to take a bath. When my son was in [...]
