Are we really the land of the free?

Have you ever wondered what Forever Stamps are? Basically, the United States Postal Service created stamps that never lose their value. If the postage rate goes up, then the stamp value also goes up. The beauty of this is if you purchase postage and then the rate of a stamp increases, you don't have to go replace your postage. Yesterday, I addressing my Father's Day card for my daddy and reached in the drawer to pull out a stamp. I looked down and saw the stamp had the word freedom on it. But, because it was a forever stamp, it said so below the [...]

What does the “X” mean?

Have you noticed people with a giant red X on their hand today? Do you have any idea what it represents? It is a statement. It is a declaration. It says, I'm in it to end it!" What is "it"? Modern day slavery. Seriously? Didn't we abolish slavery in the 1800s with the Emancipation Proclamation? Some estimate there are 27 million held in slavery today. Others say that number is too low. The Washington Post reported there are 30 million slaves in the world today and 600,000 of them are located in the United States.  How is that possible? How [...]

Why are you home today?

Do you have the day off? Chances are if you work at a bank, a school or any other government agency, you have President's Day off. It started out being a day that celebrated George Washington, our first President. Then Abraham Lincoln, our sixteenth President, was included in the celebration. Today, it is a day designated to honor all of our nation's Presidents. Which President is your favorite? I'd have to say Abraham Lincoln. He is regarded as one of America's greatest heroes. A strong civil rights activist, when President, Lincoln made it one of his highest priorities to abolish slavery [...]

Did you know?

Are you aware that January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month? And January 11th Human Trafficking Awareness Day. President Obama declared it such last year. Many of us would like to think human trafficking is a third world issue or at the very least, that it's an inner city issue. We don't like to acknowledge that it is as close as our own backyard, because by doing so, we may have to do something about it. It's scary.  After all, what can I do? What can you do? The statistics are staggering. Polaris Project states that human trafficking [...]

How to Turn Your Problems into Opportunities

How do you handle disappointment or problems when they come knocking at your door?  Does it change the way you act, feel, or think?  When problems are small, most people just roll with it, but the big ones can stop us in our tracks. My buddy, Joe, seemed to have one big problem after another.  In fact, some might consider Joe a magnet for trouble.  The sad thing is, he never really caused his problems.  They just seemedprobl to find him and stick around for a while. Have you ever felt that way?  Well, maybe you can learn a thing [...]

Are you part of the solution?

Do you listen to talk radio?  I don't listen often, but last night I had the opportunity to be on a talk show in Houston, Texas called Sunday Night Live. The host, Kim Wier,  focused on the issue of sex trafficking in America, specifically in the Houston, Texas area.  Like Atlanta, they have been identified as a hub for sex trafficking. It isn't the typical topic of discussion on a Christian radio talk show; however, its necessary.  The only way to advance against this evil is to raise awareness and propel people into action. This is a horrific problem that [...]

Do Something!

The Constitution of the United States of America Are you familiar with the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America? It states that, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." This was passed by Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified by the states on December 6, 1865. Yet, today, slavery still exists in America. President Obama declared January to be National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.  For the first [...]
