Are you a heavy sleeper? I usually am and so is my son; however, my daughter and husband are not. Last night there was a loud crash in the hall bathroom at about 4 a.m. Laura’s bedroom is beside the bathroom and her headboard backs up to the bathroom wall, so needless to say, it woke her. I don’t think her feet touched the floor between her room and our room. I thought I dreamed the crash in the bathroom, but was certain the crash of my bedroom door slamming open was real. My sweet husband got up to save the night and tucked her back in bed. Daddy likes being his daughter’s hero.
I rolled over and tried to go back to sleep only to listen to the neighbor’s dogs bark from 4 a.m. until 5 a.m. As I tossed and turned in my bed trying to find sleep, my mind began to race to why the dogs were barking and what the noise was in my house. I came up with all sorts of related combinations for the noise and the dogs. When I actually looked in the bathroom, I realized the noise was oh so none threatening and uneventful. The suction cups on the razor holder came loose and the razor and its holder crashed into the bathtub making a loud noise. It was nothing!
We do the same thing with life’s situations that come our way. We stress and worry about how awful something might be and we play the “What if” game. Why loose sleep when you could sleep in peace? Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:25-34 and Luke 11:12-31 not to worry about things. We don’t benefit from it.
We need to take a lesson from Laura on how to handle things that try to bring stress and concern. She heard a sound she couldn’t explain rationally, so she ran to her daddy. When things seem stressful or unexplainable, run to Daddy. He invites us to do so in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Once Laura’s Daddy was on the scene, she was able to go back to sleep and rest in peace. Psalm 55:22 says “Cast your cares on the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall.” Why wouldn’t you run to the LORD if He is willing to take all of your cares and worries and give you peace in return? He promises to give us peace that surpassing our understanding [Philippians 4:7].
No matter what you’re facing today, run to Daddy. He’s ready, able and willing to take care of you.
