What are your favorite Valentine’s Day memories from your childhood? I loved when we all brought a shoebox to school and decorated them to collect our Valentine’s Day cards. I loved the yummy treats my mom always baked for us in the shape of hearts. However, my favorite part of Valentine’s Day was always when my Daddy came home from work. I would come running when I heard him walk through the front door. He would set his things down, hang his coat up, smile at me and ask “Will you be my Valentine?” When I said “yes” he would produce a heart shaped box of chocolates. I’d leap in his arms for a hug and then tear into my box of candy.
At the time I’m sure my Daddy thought the candy was the highlight of the day for me; however, having him ask me to be his Valentine was what made my day. My Daddy chose me. He loved me, and he wanted me to know it. Then he gave me the opportunity to love him back.
I realize I’m blessed to have grown up with such an amazing daddy. To this day he is a reminder to me of the love my heavenly Father has for me. You may or may not have had a loving relationship with your father growing up, but you do have the opportunity to have a loving relationship with your heavenly Father. He loves you [Romans 5:8]. He chose you [Ephesians 1:11]. He wants you to know it [Ephesians 3:17-18]. He also wants to give you the opportunity to love Him back [John 3:16, 1 John 1:9].
Your heavenly Father is standing before you, holding His heart out to you asking if you will be His Valentine. Will you give Him your heart and accept His in return? I pray you do. Happy Valentine’s Day!
