Do you exercise? Run? I think I’ve established that I am not a runner. In fact, my mantra has always been “I’ll only run if someone’s shooting at me.” That was until my son had this great idea we could run this summer and train to run a 5K together when he came back from studying in Belgium. We both knew he could have walked out the front door and run a 5K. I was the one who would need the whole summer to train to run it. So, I did. It’s amazing what you’ll do for your children. I’ve worked all summer, even overcoming strep in my ankle of all things, to run the race on August 31st with my son.
This weekend we were putting dates of events on our fall calendar and realized he wasn’t going to be able to realistically do the race on the 31st. Seriously? After training all summer, he wasn’t going to be able to run with me. Then what would motivate me to run it?
Well, it’s simple. Someone’s shooting, so I need to run. Shots are not being fired at me, personally, but they are being fired at people I care about. Victims of human sex trafficking are abused, tortured and in some cases even shot. It has to stop!
On August 31st, Out of Darkness is partnering with Celebrate Freedom to raise funds to fight against sex trafficking in Atlanta. By running this 5K, I can help raise awareness and financial support for the cause. But I need your help.
Matthew 25:45 says,
He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me.'”
What will you do for the least of these caught up in modern day slavery? You don’t have to run, but you can if you want to join me.
- You can sign up at here and register for the race. If August 31st won’t work for your schedule, Wellspring Living is having their race, Run for One, on September 15th. You can read more about it here.
- You can also support me as a runner (never thought I’d type those words). Mail your check to: Out of Darkness, PO Box 550849, Atlanta, GA 30355 and let them know you’re supporting Susan Norris as a runner for the Celebrate Freedom 5K or donate online here.
- You can volunteer. Out of Darkness is predominately made up of volunteers. You can get trained to be one by going here to sign up. To get involved with Wellspring Living, go here to sign up. There’s a list of other organizations you can find here or in the back of my book, Rescuing Hope.
Whether you give of your energy by running a 5K, your finances by supporting me as a runner or your time by volunteering, you’re needed in this fight. Shots are being fired. This is a matter of life and death. And you are needed in this fight. What will you do?

You may choose to look the other way, but you can never say again that you did not know.
How will you help?
