Have you ever heard the expression, It’s not what you know, but who you know? Having connections in life tends to open doors and gain the attention of others.
As a writer, having endorsements from famous people or other well known writers opens doors. It gains the attention of agents and publishers.
I remember pitching my very first book idea to an acquisition’s editor at a writer’s conference. I was scared to death. Fortunately, I had gotten to know the editor throughout the week socially, so some of the anxiety about our meeting had subsided. At the very least, him was more approachable.
He read through my book proposal, peered over the pages and said,
Who would endorse your book?”
I began rattling off the names of people I knew who had indicated their support as well as a few names my agent had contacts with who she felt would put their name to my project. He sat there a moment and then said,
What about a big name?
I wanted to say, What about one? I mean, let’s face it, who do I know in high places? Trying not to look like the fool I felt like, I replied,
You mean like Beth Moore or Kay Arthur?
He smiled at me and nodded as if the blonde was finally catching on to the conversation. I sheepishly smiled at him and said,
Well, we may have a problem, because I don’t know Beth Moore or Kay Arthur, but if you do, feel free to ask them to endorse my book.
Fortunately for me, he and I had been joking with each other all week long, so he simply laughed. Needless to say, that book is still sitting in a file folder in the back of my filing cabinet.
The good news for you and me is we do know someone in high places who is willing to lend His name and support to our efforts. His name is Jesus. We don’t have to be an A-lister to gain His partnership. We simply need to seek Him.
When we try to break through the gates of heaven with our prayers and petitions, Jesus is there already interceding on our behalf [Hebrews 7:25-28]. Act 2:33 tells us Jesus sits right beside the Father. You can’t find a more inside track. He has the Father’s ear and He endorses us and intercedes for us.
I love Beth Moore and Kay Arthur and have a lot of respect for them, but I have the full endorsement of a higher power waiting to assist me and so do you.
I sat before this editor hoping to have him desire to publish my book. I brought the endorsements I had with me and had to rest on their names to get his attention and that of his publisher. As you and I sit before the Father today, we can share the desires of our hearts with Him without concern of rejection. With the endorsement of Jesus’ name, we will have His undivided attention.
