Whose boat are you in?

What is your pastor teaching on during this Christmas season? Our church finished up a study of the book of Acts yesterday. Pastor Tom shared from Acts 27 and 28 yesterday. He talked of how Paul was on a ship caught in a horrible storm and it appeared all was lost, including the lives of everyone on board. Paul stepped up to the plate and told everyone on board they wouldn't die. In a time when he was the odd man out, he was willing to step up and speak truth, even though the circumstances didn't point to the truth [...]

FEAR IS A FOUR LETTER WORD

Fear - it's a four letter word, but for some reason, it's one people tend to embrace more often than not. Many times in life we find the things we fear never come to pass. This weekend, we were blessed to have Jason Upton lead worship at Riverstone Church. It was a blessing not only to hear him sing, but to hear some of the stories behind the songs he wrote.  When he was talking about faith and fear he said something very profound, It takes more faith to believe fear. Fear disappoints me more than hope, I just give it more [...]

Are you prepared to take a stand?

Are you standing firm in your faith? The phrase, take a stand, means: to take a position in opposition to someone or something; to oppose or resist someone or something." Many people today blast their opinions on Twitter and Facebook, simply based on what they've read online or what they've see others share. Few people take the time to investigate and find the source of the information to determine if it is accurate or not before speaking out for or against it. Yesterday, I had the privilege of listening to my daughter deliver a message to a youth group about standing [...]

Show me………..

Do you like the theater? I love going to plays and I especially love musicals. My favorite is My Fair Lady. No one has ever done it like Audrey Hepburn. She was magical as Eliza Doolittle. She's such a sassy character. One of the songs she sings in the play is called Show Me. The premise of the song is don't just say you love me, demonstrate it. Just in case you haven't ever seen it:   As my mama used to say, Actions speak louder than words." In James 2:14-18 he addresses the idea actions, however, he [...]

Humble Beginnings

Have you ever had a dream and wondered if it would ever come to fruition? Or have you found yourself in a dark place and wondered if you'd ever find your way out? Maybe you have a loved one who struggles with addiction, sickness, or is lost. In Matthew 13:31-32 we read, He told them another parable: 'The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that [...]

It’s time!

What is your favorite part of the day? Are you a morning person? Do you jump up quickly when you hear the beeping of your alarm clock? Or are you more a middle of the day person. You like being in the midst of the grind with people around you and the buzz of the day? Could it be the evening? Coming home and propping your feet up at the end of a long day? Me? I prefer mornings. I love sunrises, because they are a promise of new light, new life, and new beginnings. I like the quiet of a [...]

How do you take your coffee?

Are you a coffee drinker? I used to be a daily coffee drinker. Every morning I would brew a pot of coffee and one to two cups later, I was ready to face my day. That was until my girlfriend, Teddee, knocked on my door one day. When I opened it she handed me a Chai Latte. She swore it was heaven in a cup and it was pretty darn close. Gradually, I shifted from drinking coffee to drinking hot tea. Every now and then I do crave a good cup of coffee. This morning we decided to take a [...]

God’s Not Dead

Have you seen the movie, God's Not Dead yet? It is a story of a young college student, Josh Wheaton, who is challenged by an atheist professor to declare God is dead. When the student refuses to do so, the professor tells him he'd better be prepared to debate and defend his position and if he fails to do so, he fails the class. This picture is very exciting for Riverstone Church, because our worship pastor, Daniel Bashta, wrote the theme song. It was first made popular by David Crowder. He discovered it on Youtube and played it for the first time [...]

How cold it is? It’s so cold…

How cold is it at your house? It's currently 16 degrees outside.  Yesterday morning when I woke up it was six degrees. Six degrees! I almost had to get out a map of the United States to make certain I still lived in the south.  Last night I couldn't seem to get warm, so I finally pulled out my North Face coat I got for Christmas and put it on while I watched television. It's not that we keep our house polar bear cold. The thermostat was set on 68, but there weren't enough blankets or hot tea to get [...]

“Go home, Rusty dog, go home!”

Does your family like to tell stories of things that happened in the past? It never seems to fail when my family comes together the story telling begins. Sometimes a new story will be added to the mix, but you can always count on someone bringing up and old story and telling it as if those gathered around have never heard it. One of my funniest memories of my sister-in-law, Kim, is when we were all gathered around the dinner table and my mother started into a story we’d all heard a million times.  Apparently, Kim wasn’t up to hearing [...]
