It’s Time for Endurance Training

Do you play a sport or did you in high school or college? One of the most important things for athletes is for them to stay strong until the end of the game. You can't afford to run out of gas before the whistle blows or the buzzer buzzes. In order to do this, many athletes have to build up their endurance, which is, the ability to do something difficult for a long time, the ability to deal with pain or suffering that continues for a long time, or the quality of continuing for a long time." Building one's endurance comes from [...]

How do you love?

Why do you do the things you do for others? Do you do so because you think God is keeping score? Or maybe you are? Or do you do what you do out of devotion? This morning I stumbled upon a beautiful picture of love and devotion. It was a video of a husband and wife who clearly love one another. The wife enjoyed demonstrating her love for her husband in the simple tasks of life: making his favorite omelet or making sure his clothes are crisp and clean. Her world came tumbling down when she learned she was going blind. [...]

Who will hold the pen?

Happy New Year! 2015 has begun. Do you have any traditions for ringing in the new year? Do you gather with friends and family? Do you go out or stay in? I don't have any grand traditions for New Year's Eve particularly, but I do have some things I like to do before the ball drops. I pack all of my Christmas decorations away and give the house a thorough cleaning so I start the New Year off with things in order. Granted, it only takes hours with everyone home for the order to be reordered, but at least the year [...]

To Abstain or Not?

Are you participating in Lent? Lent is the Christian season of preparation before Easter that runs for forty days. Typically, individuals abstain from something as an act of sacrifice for the Lord. The purpose of the sacrifice is to focus on Jesus and all He sacrificed for our sins [John 3:16, Romans 5:8]. I've heard of people abstaining from a variety of things: dessert television coffee chocolate soft drinks eating out movies The list goes on and on. I have asked friends in person and on Facebook if they're giving up something for Lent and, if so, why. Some responses [...]

How far will you travel?

Do you travel during the holidays? Our travel consists of seeing family. My parents live in North Carolina, about six hours away. My older brother lives five hours from me and my baby brother lives across the country in Colorado. I don't want to even think about how long of a drive that would be. If I travel there, it's by plane. It's not always convenient nor does it always fit in the budget to travel, but we do because our family is important to us. We're willing to sacrifice and/or be inconvenienced to spend time with them. We love [...]

How to Give the Best Gifts

Have you noticed the mornings are cooler? According to the calendar, it will officially be fall this weekend; however, for many the day Big Yellow started rolling, taking children back to school, summer came to an end.  One of the many things people do to usher fall in is start cleaning out their closets. A  young friend of mine has taken this opportunity to host a clothing drive for Solomon House, a safe house for victims of sex trafficking run by Out of Darkness. She announced the clothing drive at her church and among her peers.  Yesterday, she showed up [...]

It’s only Friday, Sunday’s Coming!

When you're in the midst of a deep, dark season of life, do you call it good?  Is it something you'd knowingly walk into and anticipate? If you're like most people, the answer to both of those questions would be a resounding, "NO!" Most people don't like to experience pain and suffering. In fact, we attempt to avoid it at all costs; however, there are times when God uses pain and suffering to reveal His glory to a dark and dismal world. Today is Good Friday. We call it good, but Isaiah 53:3-10 reminds us it is the day, He [...]

Got Leftovers?

Do you like leftovers? When my son was home, we rarely if ever had leftovers from one day to the next. He would eat whatever I prepared for dinner two to three times before going to bed and if there happened to be anything left when he went to sleep, he would take care of it for breakfast, no matter what dinner happened to be. Yes, we would frequently smell things like salmon or refried beans being warmed up in the morning.  It was enough to make you skip breakfast. I’ve never been one to care for leftovers.  It’s not [...]

From Sacrifice to Blessing

Do you celebrate Lent? Lent is the season of preparation leading up to Easter.  It begins on Ash Wednesday, which is today, and ends on Easter. Traditionally, lent is a time of prayer, sacrifice, fasting, and good works. People tend to focus on what they sacrifice during lent. Many times, they begrudgingly do without the item(s) they've chosen to sacrifice.  The Lord tells us to be joyful always, even in our giving [1 Thessalonians 5:16-18]. Have you ever received something from someone and you knew they didn't really want to give it to you? It's awkward and uncomfortable.  There's no more excitement [...]

A Story Worth Telling

Do you know anyone who fought in one of our nations wars?  I had an uncle and a great uncle who served in multiple wars, but neither ever spoke about it.  When I was in high school we had a Vietnam veteran come and share some of his story in  history class.  We were captivated by what he shared. He told one story that burned into my memory and I can recall it today as if I just heard it. We were in a fox hole, me and my buddy, with gunfire all around us. It was intense and the [...]
