How much time do you have?

How much time do you have? It seems like no matter how much time you have, it's never enough. The clock always seems to be ticking. Time is one of the most valuable commodities we all have. Last week my children both asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day. My answer was something that costs nothing, yet costs everything....time. Oh, they could have purchased me a variety of gifts, and I'm sure I would have appreciated anything they gave me, but the one thing I wanted more than anything was a bit of their time. Life seems to be on [...]

Problem or Solution?

How observant are you? Have you ever tested it? When I took a self defense training class with Powerhouse Self-Defense, one of the things the instructor tested was our observation skills. We were given a picture to look at for a few seconds and then we were asked to list all of the objects we saw in the picture. Next we looked at picture for a few seconds then given an altered picture and had to identify the missing items from the original photograph. Most participants learned they weren't very observant. Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons conducted a study on selective attention. Their findings are referred to [...]

FRONT LINE FRIDAY with 4SARAH

Today is Front Line Friday and you have the opportunity to meet Jessica, a staff member of 4Sarah. 4Sarah is a nonprofit that assists women caught in sexual exploitation to shift the trajectory of their lives through outreach and their scholarship program. When did you first hear about the issue of sex trafficking  America? I first heard about it in 2008. I had heard about it happening overseas but never thought it was so wide spread in America. I know it was probably going on, but in 2008 my eyes were opened and my heart began to stir. Did you read any books [...]

How do you spell SUCCESS?

How do you define success? Webster's Dictionary defines success as, the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect or fame; the correct or desired result of an an attempt; someone or something that is successful: a person or thing that succeeds." Last night I had the privilege to speak at an Out of Darkness Ambassador's Training. Their ambassadors are just as the name implies, representatives of the ministry. They speak across the state about Out of Darkness, sharing what the ministry does and how people can partner with them in their mission to, REACH, RESCUE, and RESTORE all victims of commercial [...]

Is there really a choice?

What are your thoughts on pornography and prostitution? Do you believe women choose to pursue either? I'm sure you're pretty clear on my opinion on the issue after spending over three years working with survivors of sex trafficking. Shared Hope International defines sex trafficking as: The recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act where such an act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age." I have had countless conversations with people on the [...]

Is it a problem or an opportunity in disguise?

Do you answer your phone when you don't recognize the number calling? I tend to let those roll to voicemail. I assume if it's someone who needs to speak with me, they'll leave a message. I it's a telemarketer, I won't have to talk with them. This Saturday morning as I was walking through the farmer's market, my phone rang. I looked to see who was calling. While I didn't recognize the number, I did notice it was a number that had called me multiple times over the past two weeks, so I answered it. Good morning, Susan, I hope [...]

Will we learn from history or choose to look the other way?

Do you remember where you were? It's the question everyone asks on this solemn day. People you don't even know will strike up a conversation with you about where you were on September 11th. It's one of those days we will never forget as long as we live, like those who were alive when Pearl Harbor was bombed. It was a time when the safety we all felt on our home turf was breached. We had never considered anyone would be bold enough to cross our borders and do harm to our citizens. We were comfortable and as a result, [...]

Should we enter enemy territory?

Walking through enemy territory with block pastor, Dave. Have you ever gone somewhere dangerous? A place that would be considered enemy territory? You have to enter with confidence in order to do so, knowing you have the full weight of heaven behind you as you go. In Mark 5:1-20 you find a story of Jesus doing just that, walking boldly into enemy territory. He had traveled by boat to an area where a demon possessed man lived among the tombs.  He didn't choose to live among the tombs.  He was cast there by the people of his village [...]

What are you doing about it?

How old do you think you need to be to join the fight against human sex trafficking? Should there be specific age to get involved? Sex trafficking is often called modern day slavery.  Girls in the trade are called prisoners or captives. Isaiah 61:1-2 says, The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day [...]
