Whose boat are you in?

What is your pastor teaching on during this Christmas season? Our church finished up a study of the book of Acts yesterday. Pastor Tom shared from Acts 27 and 28 yesterday. He talked of how Paul was on a ship caught in a horrible storm and it appeared all was lost, including the lives of everyone on board. Paul stepped up to the plate and told everyone on board they wouldn't die. In a time when he was the odd man out, he was willing to step up and speak truth, even though the circumstances didn't point to the truth [...]

Are you bringing Jesus this Christmas?

Do you collect anything at Christmas time? For a while I collected Christmas tea pots. That fad passed quickly and I switched to snowmen. The top of my entertainment center looks like we had a major snow storm, I have so many snowmen up there. The most recent thing I've been collecting is nativity scenes. There are so many unique ones out there. I love the idea of buying them from different countries, but clearly I have some traveling that needs to take place because the only international nativities I have are a small nativity a former student brought me from Israel [...]

This rocked my world and became a game changer.

Do you have a big family? Compared to my grandmother, who was one of ten children, I have a small family. I was one of three. I'm the middle child and the only daughter. I tell my brothers that our family is like an Oreo cookie, the best part is in the center. My husband and I have two children. They are our joy. I have loved every stage of their lives from babies to almost adulthood. I would say they are two of my best friends; however, the greater blessing is that they say the same thing about me. [...]

Is somebody watching you?

My very first 5K race: Celebrate Freedom at Jim Miller Park Have you ever felt like someone was watching you? It may be more true than you think. About a year and a half ago a friend of mine, Kristin McLendon, ran a half marathon.  She started running to get in shape after giving birth to her son. I witnessed the entire transformation and was thrilled for her when she completed her goal, the half marathon. A seed was planted. I had absolutely no desire to run a half marathon, but I did have a desire to get [...]

What are you doing tonight?

Do you celebrate Halloween? I know there are people who stand on both sides of the fence on this one. Some think it is horrible and they wouldn't have anything to do with it.  They keep their lights off, their door closed and they choose not to participate. Others want their children to have fun, but don't want to encourage the holiday, so they dress up and go to a church festival which is a family friendly alternative. Others allow their children to dress up and go door to door through their neighborhoods collecting candy. And still others have a party [...]

Do you hear them?

Have you ever attended a running race? I've been to four as a spectator and two as a competitor. One of my favorite races to follow was my brother's Ironman race in Florida several years ago. The level of determination on the faces of the competitors was impressive. They swam 2 miles in the ocean, biked 113 miles and then ended the race by running a marathon. Any of those legs of the race on it's own is impressive, but to combine the three in one day is borderline insane. Our family traveled to various points along the race route [...]

Who’s your daddy?

Happy Father's Day, Daddy! Don’t you just love it when a baby is born?  It is as if the Lord speaks in an audible voice saying, “Life should continue.”  My brother and his wife just had their third child, a beautiful, baby boy.  They named him Jacob. In Biblical times, names carried meaning to them.  In Genesis 17:5, God changes Abram’s name to Abraham because it meant father of many nations.  In Genesis 16:11 Hagar was told to name her son Ishmael “for the LORD has heard of your misery.”  In Genesis 32:8, God changes Jacob’s name to [...]

Have you ever flown on the red eye?

Have you ever flown the red eye before? The red eye is a flight that departs late at night and arrives early the next morning. About eight years ago, our family was flying home from vacation and had to take the red eye.  Since I have a great deal of trouble sleeping on a plane and it was quiet because most of the people were asleep, I took the opportunity to have a quiet time. I opened my Bible to the book of Acts and started reading chapter 1.  I felt the Lord tug at my heart when I came [...]

Do I know you?

Have you ever met someone for the first time and had an instant connection with them? You  feel completely comfortable, and can easily discuss things, even though you've known each other for less than a few minutes.  It never ceases to amaze me how often this happens. This past weekend I had the opportunity to speak at the DOLL Conference in Fitzgerald, Georgia. Fitzgerald is a small town in South Georgia. The church where the event was held reminded me a lot of my husband's home church in Whiteville, North Carolina.  The youth pastor arranged for us to have dinner [...]

What kind of review would you get?

Do you ever read book reviews? I rarely do, because I tend to rely more on my friends for their assessment of a book than strangers.  Yesterday, Rescuing Hope had a blog tour where about twenty different bloggers from across the country read it and wrote reviews. I'm happy to say all but a couple of the bloggers had great things to say about Hope. The few who had negative comments didn't bother me. I know I'll never please everyone with my writing. After all, not everyone loves the Bible and that is the greatest book ever written. One of [...]
